SRI LANKA - FEBRUARY 12 (OR THEREABOUTS) 2016

Okay, I have to admit defeat. It has become overwhelmingly apparent that I will be unable to post "daily updates" as previously planned. There is just too much to do, and not enough time to do it all, and I have no excuse....but perhaps an update every second day? Yes, lets attempt that, although even as I am scribing these words, I am already setting up myself up for defeat...but lets try anyways....and in my next post I will discuss in greater detail, why we chose to come to Sri Lanka...

We have been in Sri Lanka for four days, although the first day was a bit of a wipeout, and I am already enamored with it. It is hot and humid, yet I am tolerating the humidity rather well, unlike my inability to post every day, I have (at least so far) triumphed humidity. That has always been my downfall when visiting tropical countries, the humidity sucks the life out of me, but that does not seem to be the case here. Feron will get up around 4 am, grap the laptop and go out on the deck and write her usual colourful and enthusiastic reports of what is going on, and I might follow her out in another 30 minutes. So far that is the routine. Have a few cups of coffee with her, chat a little about the experiences so far, then at 6 am precisely a group of us (all of us in our group, plus most of the others that are staying here at the Nor Lanka) head out for a morning walk/hike. Anoma (who owns the hotel with her husband Helge) usually leads, as she knows the countryside, but alas, she was a no-show today (she is a tireless worker, and without her, our efforts here would fall on the wayside, and if the world was full of people like her, there would be peace on the planet...but I digress-actually I am pretty good at digressing...) so I informed the group that I could lead the way....it is worth noting that there are 6 or so Norwegians, with some of them having limited English skills.....so off we go.....it didn't take long before our trek came off the rails...I was sure this was the way...but alas it was not...so of course I quickly became the brunt of numerous, and relenting jokes, but it serves me right. Streets are not what you may think they are, and apart from the main thoroughfare, there does not seem to be any rhyme or reason to where streets are located...and I use the term "street" losely, more like trails that have some resemblance of pavement on them, but barely wide enough for a vehicle, in fact they are usually only travelled on by foot or tuk-tuk....and it is very easy to get turned around. Luckily we did recognize landmarks from previous treks, so it wasn't like we were actually "lost", just going in a different direction. In any event we were successful in the trek...but I will pay more attention to the turns tomorrow.... pics taken on the morning walk follow:
A family that always greets us on our daily walk. Anoma is on the right.
Swamp in the jungle...suprisingly very little bugs..
Panoramic shot of swamp/jungle..
Nice Guest House on a nice piece of property. This is actually a pretty nice sideroad.
Small boat bobbing on the water, at the west end of Unawatuna Beach

Jungle Beach-about a 20 minute walk from Unawatuna
TAG Artwork
 Banana plant flowering
Black Scorpion, rather common and while they will not kill you, apparently the pain is rather excruciating
